Skeleton found behind bars in closed Paterson jail

Decomposed human remains were found Monday, Sept. 12, 2016 inside the old Paterson Police Headquarters. The bones were found in a jail cell. The PD was boarded up after a fire more than 35 years ago and has been vacant ever since.

“The deceased has not been identified and information regarding his identity will not be released at this time,” Paterson Police Capt. Richard Reyes said in a statement.

The remains were found during an inspection of the old police headquarters at 111 Washington St.

Police and the Passaic County Medical Examiner’s Office removed the remains were removed.

They believe the dead person had been homeless, crawled into the police station for shelter and accidentally got locked into the jail cell, where they died and their remains remained for years.
