Popular Bloomfield soccer player, 16, killed in two-car crash

BLOOMFIELD –¬†A popular Bloomfield High School soccer player was killed late on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012 when the Honda Civic in which she was riding collided with a Chevy Camaro at the corner of Broughton Avenue and Walter Street in Bloomfield, police said.

Paramedics took Christina Lembo, 16, to University Hospital in Newark, where she died a short time later.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, Chief Assistant Prosecutor¬†Thomas Fennelly said. The prosecutor’s office is also waiting for the result of blood tests to determine if alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Hundreds of Lembo’s friends and classmates gathered at the intersection for a vigil.

“I’m trying so hard (to be strong),” said Deanna Laterza, fighting back tears. Laterza played soccer with Lembo and was her best friend since kindergarten. “Her dad just passed away five years ago. It’s just so hard on her family.”
