Robert Hegyes: Death of a sweathog

Robert Hegyes, who played Juan Epstein on ‘Welcome Back, Kotter,’ has died in Metuchen.

Robert Hegyes, who was a member of one of the most popular television ensemble casts of the 1970s, “Welcome Back, Kotter,” was living in Metuchen. And he put a photo of his home and his home address on the Internet (291 Woodbridge Ave., Metuchen).

Hegyes, 60, was in his Metuchen home on Jan. 26, 2012, when he began suffering chest pains. Fearful it might be a heart attack (Hegyes had suffered one a couple of years earlier), he was taken at 9:02 a.m. to John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Edison. (Same hospital where Luther Vandross died a few years back).

Anyway, Hegyes arrived at the hospital at 9:40 a.m. in full cardiac arrest, according to the hospitals PR department. He died there.

A funeral was held on Sunday, Jan. 29, 2012 at the Flynn & Son Funeral Home at 23 Ford Ave., Fords. The funeral took place at the funeral home that evening.

Also noteworthy: Hegyes was a cousin of New Jersey resident Jon Bon Jovi.

UPDATE: There was no sign of Hegyes “Welcome Back, Kotter” cast members at his wake and funeral in Fords. But one observer told a local reporter that John Travolta sent a tribute of flowers. There was also talk of a memorial in Los Angeles where many of the former cast members reside.
